Dock designer questions

Is there free dock design software?

Yes. Dock Builder’s designer is free with no account: any number of sections, any shape, one project saved in your browser. Most other free designers only draw one maker’s parts. See dock design software compared.

How do I draw a dock layout to scale?

Type real dimensions: every section, gangway and lift has width and length in feet, so the plan is to scale from the first click. With a free account you can print it as a scaled PDF. See how to draw a dock plan.

Does it tell me how many floats I need?

Not by load. Floats are laid out as a grid under the deck (2×4 ft by default), not sized for buoyancy. Use the dock float calculator for that.

Is my drawing good enough for a dock permit?

It’s a good start. A free account exports the pages most permit offices ask for: a dimensioned plan, an aerial page and a profile. Requirements vary, so check with your office. See permit drawings.
